Thomas "Gene" Spriggs

Thomas, affectionately known as "Gene," was born on April 24, 1942, in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania, to Elizabeth Spriggs. Thomas received his education in the McConnellsburg School System and later obtained a degree from Penn State University in State College, Pennsylvania. Although he was born in McConnellsburg, he spent most of his life in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he pursued various occupations. However, his true passion was barbering, and he eventually obtained a Barber/Manager License that allowed him to run his own shop. Through his work, Thomas trained and mentored many local barbers in the Harrisburg area and formed a strong connection with his community that lasted for over four decades until his retirement. Thomas was a passionate hunter and fisherman at heart and also an avid sports fan with the Las Vegas Raiders being his top team. He loved to be free, as was displayed by his love of horses and riding them. His horse “Fatman” was his pride and joy that he rode and cared for every chance he could. Thomas was a proud member and officer of the “Ozark Riders,” a local riding club that traveled around the country to various trail rides. He dedicated his spare time to his church serving as a Deacon at Goodwin Memorial Baptist Church. He had a strong love for music and spent hours downloading and listening to various genres. Additionally, he enjoyed watching his favorite old western movies and shows at his leisure. Thomas passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at his Harrisburg home and is now resting in the arms of the Lord. Thomas was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Spriggs; his daughter, Lisa Burhannan; his sons, Thomas Christopher Charles and Tommy Bonner; his brothers, Bishop Norman, Kenneth Sr., James and Jack Spriggs; and his sisters, Mary M. Jackson, Donna Bracey and Betty Harris. Thomas is survived by his beloved wife, Doris Spriggs of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He also leaves behind several daughters, including Lauboria Robinson, Crystal Spriggs-Mitchell (Maurice), Esther Glover (Maurice), Ginel Spriggs, Thomasa Counts-Walker (Clint) and Tommi Spriggs, all of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Tina Darden and Dawn Bonner of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Yalanda Salone (Phillip) of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Titian Franklin-Torres (Sammy) of Lunas, New Mexico; several sons, including Thomas Burhannan (Sandra), Brandon O’Brien, Jai-Michael Hudson, Eugene Spriggs and Richard Johnson, all of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Kerry Harvey (Ruth), Homestead, Florida, Jamien Harvey (Kyla), Charlotte, North Carolina, and Aaron Sutch of Brigham City, Utah. His surviving siblings include Frank Spriggs of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Melissa Burke of McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania, Barbara Austin (Guy) and Janet Spriggs, both of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Additionally, he is survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends. Thomas will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on through those who loved him.
