Gwendolyn Mack

Gwendolyn Mack began her journey on Thursday, April 7, 1960, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, daughter of Jesse Lee Mack and the late Readymae Shepherd Mack. “Gwen,” as everyone called her, graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1978, where she was class salutatorian and instantly recognizable for her choice of an Afro hairstyle and her service as a Drummer and Drum Captain of the Cougar Marching Band. During high school, she spent a summer in Costa Rica where she established lifelong friends. She studied Electrical Engineering at Pennsylvania State University and treasured her reunions with high school and Penn State friends. Gwen was a longtime employee of the United States Postal Service where she worked the night shift and had many friends. She also worked at the Mechanicsburg Naval Depot and Hershey Foods. Gwen’s abiding passion was family and friendship. She enjoyed traveling almost every year to attend the King Family Reunions in South Carolina, Florida, New Jersey, Boston, Harrisburg and many other places, and the Butler-Collins Family Reunions in South Carolina. She visited or spoke by phone almost daily with family members, friends and her godchildren. In good times and bad, many of them could count on a phone call or an unexpected gift from Gwen to cheer them up. She will be fondly remembered for her heavenly Christmas fruitcake deliveries and for taking young people to amusement parks and outfitting them in their favorite clothes. Gwen departed this life on Sunday, September 3, 2023, at the Hershey Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her mother, Readymae Shepherd Mack; brother, Jesse L. Mack Jr.; aunts, Hattie Terrell and Ernestine Ware; and uncle, Leslie Ware. Gwen leaves so many admirers including her father, Jesse L. Mack; brothers, Carlton E. and Kenneth W. Mack; uncles and aunts, George Mack Jr. and Shirley Mack and Walter and Norma Mack; uncle, Kevin Shepherd; sister-in-law, Lisa A. Jones; niece and nephew, Sophia and Nicholas Mack; cousin, Jermica Ware; godsons, Quincy and Xavier Garfield and Zyk're Kent; close friends, Tracy Kent (Lee C. Kent Jr.), Angie Logan and Lisa White; as well as many cousins and many friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and United Negro College Fund.
