Grace M. Howard

Grace M. Carr Howard, daughter of the late Sammie Carr, Sr., and the late Grace Duncan Carr, was born Monday, August 23, 1943, in Montgomery, Alabama. Upon graduation from Alabama State Laboratory High School, she matriculated to Alabama State University, Montgomery, Alabama, where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree and later Shippensburg University, Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, where she earned her Masters Degree in Education. Grace promoted education as the “Key to Excellence and Independence.” She retired as a Guidance Counselor from the Harrisburg School District. With a keen interest in educational, national, state and community affairs, her professional and civic affiliations included Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Nu Sigma Zeta Chapter; Past President of Omnia Bona Inc; Urban League Guild; Harrisburg Education Association (HEA), Ethnic Minority Committee, Minority Caucus Delegate and former Site Director, Explorer Program; PA State Association of Retired Educators (PSARE); NAACP, Radio-a-thon and Super Sunday Membership Drive Committees; PA School Counselors Association; National Education Association (NEA); and Ambassador for the Kidney Foundation. Among her special interests were cooking and baking from her special collection of cookbooks and recipes, shopping, reading, writing, traveling, gardening and watching “Oprah,” “Ellen,” and the Food Network, especially, “Paula Deen.” Grace was a great telephone conversationalist who truly enjoyed sharing her unique sense of humor. She entertained with a flair and many times shared her grilling expertise with family and friends. She, particularly, loved those special times spent with the Teachers and Counselors Lunch Bunch Clubs. However, above all else, Grace was devoted to enriching the lives of her daughters and grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by siblings, Sammie Carr, Jr., and Annie Bell Carr. At her Susan Way home in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, Grace M. Carr Howard completed her earthly journey leaving to cherish and emulate her legacy: husband, Arthur E. Howard; daughters, Sharon D. and Shanta F. Howard, all of Harrisburg; sisters, Ann Carr Cook, Evelyn Carr Wilson and her husband Albert, all of Montgomery; her grandchildren, Treysean W., Olivia Grace Roebuck and Amir K. Howard; other relatives and friends who are all blessed to have shared a portion of Grace’s journey.
