Ella Mae Stewart

Ella Mae Stewart was called to glory on July 21, 2023. The daughter of the late Alma and Willie Carrier, she was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on September 14, 1939. It was there that she met and married her first husband, the late Arthur T. Jefferson Sr., who was a military man. She moved with her husband to Harrisburg, PA, where they worked diligently to build a home and raise a family. Their union resulted in five children, Peter, Arthur Jr., Gregory, Theresa and Sandra. Later in life, she found love again when she met and married Freddy Stewart. Ella Mae was a dutiful wife and mother who prided herself in honoring and uplifting her family. Family was everything to her and her love for all her family was limitless. Ella Mae was employed at the Harrisburg Hospital for thirty years; this is a testament to her tenacity. She wanted a better life and she worked hard to make it happen. She had a “don’t quit” attitude which was evidenced by her unwillingness to give it up regardless of what obstacles she was facing. Her faith in God gave her the strength to persevere through the storms of life. She was a Southern Belle; translated, Ella Mae was a lady who carried herself with elegance, style and grace. She was dignified and respectful in all her interactions with others. This Southern Belle never lost her southern dialect, humble attitude or her winning smile. She loved her friends and they loved her. One of her greatest joys was being a member of American Legion Auxiliary, Post 733. There she found another family who embraced and loved her. She found friends who enjoyed some of the same hobbies she did such as bingo, casino poker and playing solitaire. Ella Mae was preceded in death by her mother, Alma Carrier; father, Willie Carrier; husband, Arthur Jefferson Sr.; husband, Freddie Stewart; sons, Peter Jefferson and Gregory Jefferson; brothers, Johnny Carrier, Thomas Carrier, Gerald Carrier, Willie Carrier; and sister, Dorothy Carrier-Disnuke. She is survived by her children, Teresa Davis, Sandra Jefferson and Arthur T. Jefferson Jr.; sisters, Gertie Carrier, Patricia Parker, Conzy Carter and Kemba Carter; brothers, Frank Carrier and Terry Carrier. She is also survived by grandchildren, Ryan Jefferson, Nicole Jefferson, Onca Jefferson, Arthur Jefferson, Arthur T. Burnett, Arthur T. Jefferson III, Anthony Jefferson and Shyeme Jefferson; as well as a host of great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
