Mattie L. Carter

Mattie Louise Carter was born Sunday, December 9, 1928, in Marianna, FL, daughter of the late Kelly Donaldson and the late Annie (Lewis) Campbell. Mattie received her formal education in the Jackson County, FL, public school system. Mattie later moved to Gettysburg, PA, where she met and married the love-of-her-life, Reverend James Carter. She was devoted to her husband and the ministry of her church. Mattie retired from Westinghouse Corporation after fifteen years of employment. Upon moving to Harrisburg, PA, Mattie joined in Christian fellowship with United Baptist Church where she was an active member and served as Church Mother. Mattie was a godly woman who loved the Lord with all her heart. She was a Bible scholar always seeking knowledge and understanding of the Bible and its teachings. As a servant leader, she took every opportunity to share the Word with others. Mattie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, fellowshipping with the saints of the church, working crossword puzzles, walking and caring for her plants. While a resident at the Ecumenical Retirement Community in Harrisburg, on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at the blessed age of ninety-four, Mattie Louise Carter exchanged mortality for immortality joining in eternal life her parents, Kelly Donaldson and Annie Campbell; her husband, Reverend James Carter; daughter, Aretha Ardrey; granddaughter, Sondra Michelle Ardrey; grandson, Charles Maurice Ardrey; and great-grandson, Samuel Lee McDonald III. Mattie leaves a legacy of love and faith to be honored and cherished by two great-granddaughters, Sasha Harper and Shardae McDonald; great-great-grandson, Rumir Johnson; great-great-granddaughters, Autumn Robinson, Rumiah Johnson and Aurora McDonald; niece, Wyvonna White (Roland); nephew, Larry McDuffie; chosen son, Charles Hursey; chosen daughters, Elaine Jones and Freda Hursey; one great-great-great-grandson; as well as a host of other loving, caring and supportive relatives and friends.
