Mark Duane Johnson

Mark Duane Johnson, beloved son of the late William Ernest Johnson Sr. and Ann Elizabeth Johnson, was born on May 18, 1964, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He spent a portion of his childhood in Hagerstown, Maryland, before returning home to Harrisburg, where his roots, relationships, and legacy would flourish. Mark was a proud graduate of Harrisburg High School, John Harris Campus, where he was a standout athlete and record-holding running back, wearing the number 22 with honor. His passion for football was matched by discipline, joy, and heart. After high school, Mark answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. During his service, he earned multiple distinctions, including recognition as an M-16 rifle sharpshooter and hand-grenade expert. He served with honor and carried the pride of a veteran throughout his life. Following his military service, Mark welcomed his beloved daughter, Patrice Johnson-Bolt. He also returned to the sport he loved, playing semi-pro football for the Harrisburg Patriots. Even after stepping off the field, he continued to pour into the game, dedicating many years as an assistant coach. His coaching journey touched numerous teams, including Harrisburg High School Football, Harrisburg High School Girls Basketball, the Harrisburg Packers, and Susquehanna Township High School Football. Through mentorship, encouragement, and unwavering belief in young athletes, Mark helped many players chase and achieve their dreams. Professionally, Mark devoted more than 30 years to Capital Blue Cross. His work ethic, reliability, and warm spirit earned him deep respect among colleagues. Mark lived life with fullness and joy. He loved dancing, attending sporting events, playing spades, cooking for family and friends, riding roller coasters, traveling, and spending time with the people he cherished. His favorite football team was the Raiders, and his favorite basketball team was the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces. Mark was a member of Fellowship Study Group Church in Harrisburg. His faith shaped his life, his service, and his love for others. On Saturday morning, August 15, 2026, Mark peacefully departed this life at the Lebanon VA Medical Center in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, at sixty-two years of age, while holding the hand of his daughter, Patrice. His transition was gentle, and his spirit rested in God’s peace. Mark was preceded in death by Terrell Robinson, whom he helped raise; his brother, William Ernest Johnson Jr.; and his sister, Ernestine Love. Mark leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Patrice Johnson-Bolt (David) of Maryland; Justin Johnson of Philadelphia, whom he helped to raise; his grandchildren; his two sisters, Janine Johnson and Sabre Johnson, both of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and a host of relatives and friends who loved him deeply. His life, love, and legacy will continue to shine in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. To God be all glory, honor, and praise.
