Lorene W. Sims

Lorene W. Sims, affectionately called Rene (Reen), was born on February 28, 1933, in Athens, Georgia. She was one of ten children born to Irene Byrd. Lorene was an extremely hard worker. At an early age, she assisted her family working in the fields of Georgia picking vegetables and cotton. In 1950, she moved to Harrisburg, PA, with her sister, Fannie Mae Pittman, and her first-born son, Charles Sims. For many years, she worked as a domestic worker. Over the years, she had four additional children, Kathy, Edward (Eddie), Peter and Robert (Robbie). She dedicated her life to raising her children to the best of her ability. She became a Nurse’s Aide at Polyclinic Hospital. In 1978, Lorene received her GED pursuing her goal of acquiring a better paying job. She fulfilled this desire and accepted employment at Hershey Foods where she retired after twenty-five years of dedicated service. After her retirement, Lorene dedicated her life to caring and nurturing her beloved ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and thirteen great-great-grandchildren. She was an exceptional caregiver always providing comfort and love, a role she embraced wholeheartedly. Her interests were as vibrant as her personality. Lorene's love for her family was unparalleled, and she often expressed this through the time she spent with family, the care she provided and the joy she found in life's simple pleasures. Lorene's ultimate passion was service to the Lord. She was a dedicated servant serving as an Evangelist for many churches during her lifetime. She devoted herself to being a great bearer of Christ’s Word. She did her best to steward her children and grandchildren towards God’s fellowship. Additionally, Lorene had a flair for fashion with a particular fondness for hats. She relished the thrill of shopping and was always on the lookout for the perfect hat to add to her collection. On Friday, February 7, 2025, Lorene W. Sims, a beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and aunt, passed away peacefully at the age of ninety-one. She was predeceased by her mother, Irene Byrd; brothers, Flutie, LC, Sam, Kerry, Joe and William; sisters, Fannie Mae Pittman and Roberta Ferris; and her loving children, Kathy Sims, Edward Sims and Peter Sims. Lorene’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, but her spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. Her laughter, her love of life and her ability to make everyone feel cherished will be sorely missed but never forgotten. She leaves to celebrate her life and cherish precious memories her oldest son, Charles Sims of Harrisburg PA, her youngest son, Robert T. Lewis (Robin) of Glen Allen, VA; ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, thirteen great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Clayton of Athens, GA, and Christine Byrd of Jacksonville, FL; as well as a host of nieces and nephews who will miss her deeply and will cherish every moment they spent in her nurturing embrace.
