Dana Denise Lumpkin

Dana Denise Lumpkin, daughter of the late James L. Crawford, Sr. and Reverend Beverly J. Hicks, was born on Friday, October 3, 1958, at Polyclinic Hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Dana was one of six children: Tonya, Cheryl, James Jr., Dwayne, and Darren. Although she was the middle child, Dana stood out as a lovely, intelligent, resourceful, and spunky young lady who was full of heart and possessed many other unspoken qualities. During her childhood, she was infatuated with teaching others and a true believer from the very beginning in living a purposeful life. Dana received her education through the Harrisburg School District, graduating from Harrisburg High School in 1976. She continued her education at Cheyney University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1980. Following graduation, she moved to Hawaii for a time before returning to the States. Upon her return, she reconnected with her high school sweetheart, Johnny Lee Moore, and together they welcomed their one and only daughter, Brandi Lee Moore. After teaching for the Harrisburg School District, Dana found her true calling in leadership. She returned to school and earned her Master of Education and Principalship from Cabrini College in 2009. Her deeply held purpose was to ensure that every student with special needs received a fair and appropriate education. She later became a Special Education Facilitator, where her role as a devoted educator and leader enabled her to impact countless lives by serving as a consistent mentor to others in many capacities. Dana's commitment to her community was vast. She volunteered to organize voter registration drives and was an active member of the Social Action Committee of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Serving as the Youth Symposium Chairperson, she educated others on human trafficking, gun violence, prevention, and many other important initiatives. In addition to her dedicated service with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she also served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Premier Charter School. Dana was also an active and faithful member of Bethany A.M.E. Church. Her purpose-driven spirit shone brightly through her continuous work to be a good steward of God. She faithfully served as Director of Christian Education, a member of the Steward Board, and the Audio-Visual Ministry. She also facilitated Vacation Bible School and the youth after-school ministry program affectionately known as "Monday Mayhem." Later in life, Dana met the love of her life, her late husband, Dennis Lumpkin. Of all the roles Dana played throughout her life, her greatest joy was being a mother and grandmother. Her daughter, Brandi, blessed her with three beautiful grandchildren: Thalil Johnson, Torajay Johnson, and Brielle Johnson. Dana was a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and some of her favorite moments were spent cheering on her team and watching football games with her family. After more than thirty years of educating and serving the Harrisburg School District, Dana retired. During her retirement, she enjoyed traveling the world with her closest friends and cherishing every opportunity to spend time with her family and friends. On Tuesday, July 14, 2026, Dana peacefully transitioned from labor to reward. She was preceded in death by her father, James L. Crawford, Sr.; her mother, Reverend Beverly J. Hicks; and her sister, Cheryl L. Crawford. Dana leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted daughter, Brandi Moore; her three beloved grandchildren, Thalil, Torajay, and Brielle Johnson; her siblings, Tonya, James Jr. (Lorraine), Dwayne, and Darren Crawford, Sr.; along with a host of relatives and dear friends who will forever cherish her life, love, and legacy.
