Dorothy L. Hinds

She has gone to live in a Holy Place. A place where there is eternal peace. She has gone home to meet her Savior and Lord in Heaven. Dorothy Hinds was born in beautiful St. Ann, Jamaica, West Indies, on December 4, 1926. She transitioned into eternal life on February 11, 2021. Dorothy received her early education at St. Ann’s Prep School and was always the brightest and most curious student in her class. During her late teens, she left home and moved to Kingston, Jamaica, seeking better career and financial opportunities. Her goal was to become a school teacher, but she didn’t have the financial resources to pursue her dream. She lived with a family member who taught her the dressmaking trade. Dorothy became successful at her craft and was the happiest sitting around a sewing machine. She also became a cook working as a private cook and domestic helper in many homes then going home during the evenings and continuing sewing to complete her clients’ dresses. Dorothy had one daughter, Shirley Morrison-Mccatty. She taught her daughter to be independent, self-reliant and the art of sewing. During Dorothy’s later years, her granddaughter, Karima Rowe, and great-grandson, Ezra Vines, became welcome additions to the family. Dorothy was very kind, vibrant, and very vocal. She would radiate a room with her conversations, her warmth and her smile. Dorothy migrated to the United States and lived in Brooklyn, New York. She worked in the hotel industry until retirement and then relocated to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where she resided for over thirty years. Dorothy dedicated her life to God at a young age. She became a faithful Christian and worshipped in the Pentecostal/Baptist ministry up until her death. Her pastimes included reading her Bible, listening to gospel music, praying, cooking and solving crossword puzzles. Along with her daughter, granddaughter and great-grandson, Dorothy also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and a host of friends.
