Ruthia Victoria "Vicky" Powell
June 21, 1939 - November 25, 2021
Ruthia Victoria “Vicky” Powell was born Wednesday, June 21st, 1939, in Sanford, North Carolina, to the late Jasper Long and Helen McIver. Victoria spread her wings and made homes in Connecticut, Maryland and Pennsylvania. She married her cherished Joseph (Joe) Powell who preceded her in death in 1987. Victoria designed the family she wanted and proudly stood with her husband and children throughout her lifetime. Victoria is the Heavenly mother of ten children, James (Sput) Jones, Randall Long, Ina Long-Webb, Leonard (Lennie) Long, Audrey Long, Marilyn Harold, Angelo Davis and three deceased children, Helen, Rhoda and Willie. Victoria is the Heavenly grandmother of twenty-five grandchildren and the great-grandmother to a host of great- and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in transition by three great-grandsons. Victoria is the Heavenly sister of eight siblings, Linda Faye Willis-McClain, Danny McIver, LeAnne Williams and five deceased siblings, Jessie, Ronald, Spencer, Loretta and Diane. Victoria is the Heavenly aunt, cousin, and friend to a vast extension of loved ones. Affectionately known as “Ma, Mom, Gram, Aunt/Mrs. Vicky,” her life journey was diverse and fruitful, guided by her commitment to family and community and supported by decades of educational development. Victoria dedicated her professional talents to improving the lives of those involved with the legal, mental health and elderly systems across the Tri-State. She closed out her career with the Area Agencies on Aging. Her tenacity, passion and grace extended beyond her professional calling. Victoria showered members of her community with love, support and guidance during their most vulnerable times. Those she knew understood she would offer love, food, a home, the truth and consequences, when necessary. Victoria valued her family. She practiced unconditional love and forgiveness, modeled strength and perseverance, encouraged educational growth and always made time for family and friends. She committed her attention to the purpose of passing forward the traditions she valued and expectations she inherited to the generations she blessed during her lifetime. At eighty-two years of age, while at her home in West Haven, Connecticut, our beloved and graceful mother answered the Lord’s call peacefully transitioning on Thanksgiving Day, November 25th, 2021, with her loved ones by her side and in her heart. Along with her parents, husband and great-grandsons, Victoria was also preceded in death by her daughters, Helen (Butchie) Long, Rhoda (Rho) Long; son, Willie Davis; brothers, Jessie McIver, Ronald (Kila) McIver, Spencer (Sput) McIver; and sisters, Loretta Davis and Diane McIver. Mom will be missed, loved and honored infinitely. Our beloved has joined the lineage of ancestors, returned to her maker, and is rejoicing in peace.
